How to Choose the Right Genre for Your Custom Song
A customer once asked us to make a rock song for his grandmother’s seventy-fifth birthday. He was a Metallica fan and felt rock was “his” sound. We had a gentle conversation. The song his grandmother was going to play on repeat was not going to be in the same genre as the song he listened to in the gym. We ended up making a soft Hindi semi-classical piece. She loved it. He texted us a week later admitting we had been right.
Genre is one of the most consequential decisions in a custom song brief. The wrong genre can make a beautifully written lyric land flat. The right genre amplifies the emotion before the listener even processes the words.
Here is how to think about it.
Start With the Recipient, Not Yourself
The first rule of genre selection is the only one that really matters. Pick the genre the recipient will love, not the genre you love. A custom song is a gift. The recipient’s ear is the one that needs to feel at home.
If you do not know what they listen to, think about what they hum in the shower or while cooking, what is on their car radio, the films whose music they have mentioned loving, and what plays at family functions that they sing along to.
The Genres We Offer
We work across ten genres: Bollywood, Romantic, Pop, Acoustic, Rock, Classical, Devotional, Folk, Rap, Jazz. Each suits different recipients and occasions.
The Cheat-Sheet
This is a starting point, not a rulebook. Adapt to the actual person.

Genre Quick Notes
Bollywood is the safest, broadest pick for Indian recipients. Cultural weight, works across ages. We can lean ballad, dance, retro, or modern.
Romantic overlaps with Bollywood ballad but works in acoustic or jazz colours too. Suits partners, anniversaries, weddings.
Pop is bright and contemporary, especially Hinglish pop for urban Indian audiences in their twenties to mid-thirties.
Acoustic is versatile and intimate. Guitar or piano led. A safe pick when you are unsure.
Rock suits recipients who genuinely listen to rock. Soft rock for older audiences, alternative for younger.
Classical in our work means Indian semi-classical — harmonium, tabla, sometimes sitar. Suits grandparents and traditional families.
Devotional suits religious recipients and milestone family events. Bhajan style or contemporary devotional both work.
Folk is strong for grandparents with rural roots or recipients with regional pride.
Rap works for younger recipients, especially brother and best-friend songs. Hinglish rap with a melodic chorus is a strong format.
Jazz is unexpected and works for sophisticated recipients with a taste for the unusual.
Mood Mapping
If you are still unsure, work from the mood you want. Tearjerker: acoustic, semi-classical, romantic ballad. Laugh-and-cry: Hinglish acoustic, pop with witty lyric, light Bollywood. Anthemic: Bollywood, rock, upbeat pop. Reverential: devotional, classical, folk. Celebratory: pop, Bollywood dance, folk.
