A Custom Song for Your Best Friend: Turning Five Memories Into Lyrics

A customer in Bangalore once filled our brief with a single paragraph that ended with the line: “she has held my hair back during three different food poisonings, so she basically owns me.” We knew immediately this was going to be a fun one to write. The song we delivered had a verse about the first food poisoning, a chorus about loyalty, and a bridge about the third food poisoning. She lost it. They both did.

Best friend songs are some of our favourite briefs. The relationship is rich, specific, full of language nobody outside it understands. That is exactly what makes the lyric writing fun.

The Five-Memory Rule

When a customer tells us they want a song for their best friend, we ask for five very specific memories. Not five general “we did everything together” statements. Five actual scenes.

The brief we want looks more like:

Five scenes give us enough material for a verse, a chorus, a second verse, a bridge, and a final chorus. We do not necessarily use all five literally — but they give the song its emotional spine.

Funny or Sentimental? Usually Both

The mistake most people make is choosing one. They tell us “make it funny” and the song ends up shallow. Or “make it emotional” and the song ends up like a wedding speech.

The best friend songs that actually land do something specific. They start funny, sneak up on you, and land emotional. Or they start emotional, swerve into a joke, and come back to feeling. The bridge is usually where the swerve happens.

In our studio sessions we call this the shoulder-tap moment. The line in the song where the listener suddenly stops smiling and feels the actual weight of the friendship. That moment cannot be planned in the brief — it emerges from the memories you share with us.

Tone, Tempo and Genre

For best friend songs we work in a wider range than for parent songs. Upbeat acoustic around 100 to 120 BPM suits funny-leaning songs. Mid-tempo pop around 85 to 100 BPM suits the balanced ones. Slower indie or singer-songwriter style at 70 to 85 BPM works when the relationship has been through real things.

Genres that work consistently: acoustic pop, indie folk, Hinglish hip-hop for banter-heavy friendships, light Bollywood with a sing-along chorus, rap with a melodic hook for college and post-college friendships. A male, female, or team’s-choice vocal can all work depending on who the song is for and from.

Language: Where Hinglish Shines

Best friend songs are the one category where Hinglish almost always wins. Real friendships do not happen in one language. They happen in code-switching, in inside jokes, in the Hindi swear word followed by the English explanation.

A line like “yaar tu ek dum extra hai but I love you for it” sounds wrong in pure Hindi and pure English. In Hinglish, it sounds exactly like how you two actually talk.

That said, if your friendship has a specific language flavour — pure Hindi banter, pure English, or even regional — we can match that. Tell us how you actually speak to each other.

The Hook They Will Quote Back

Every great friendship song needs one line they will quote back at you for years. Sometimes it is funny, sometimes sentimental. Often it is built directly from something you already say to each other.

When you fill the brief, give us three or four of your actual catchphrases — the things only you two say. We will work one of them into the chorus or the final line of the song. That is the line that lives.
